This 1948 Duncan Yo-Yo Winner shield patch marks the first year that Duncan used an embroidered yellow star as opposed to embroidered white star. The white star had been used on Winner patches since 1935. The yellow star would continue to be used on Winner and Champion patches until 1959. In 1958 and 1959, Duncan Yo-Yo Expert patches began to use a blue and a red star, respectively.
Nineteen forty-eight is the year Duncan resumed yo-yo production and contests after a five year hiatus due to World War II.
