A beautiful vintage, exotic wood Hummingbird Nature in Motion Yo-Yo made by Country Wood Shop, Ltd. of Delevan, New York. This is one of the heaviest production wooden yo-yos ever made by Country Wood Shop/Hummingbird. The wood species is Kingwood (Dalbergia cearensis), with a density of 74.9 pounds per cubic foot. Kingwood was named for French kings Louis XIV and Louis XV, who reportedly favored it for fine furniture. Unlike maple—the wood typically used for most yo-yos—if you accidentally drop a Kingwood yo-yo in water, it will sink without hesitation.
Country Wood Shop was founded in 1978 by three local artisans. Linda Donahue served as the resident artist and designer, while Brad Countryman and George Koerner were the wood sculptors. Together, they produced furniture, sculptural works, and a wide range of handcrafted wooden toys, including yo-yos. The company later evolved into the Hummingbird Toy Company.
These premier yo-yos were crafted from some of the world's rarest exotic hardwoods and are often prized by collectors. Each was precision-balanced and coated with a clear protective finish that highlighted the natural grain and color of the wood. The yo-yo in this exhibit was originally boxed with a soft velour carrying pouch, extra string, and a Hummingbird Yo-Yo Trick Booklet.
While the specific wood species was not named on the packaging (an omission that was fixed on the packaging used by Hummingbird a few years later), its weight and appearance on the back of the 1988 Hummingbird product sheet make it unmistakably identifiable as Kingwood.
