Color photograph of Tom Smothers on a golf course in California, performing Rock the Baby yo-yo trick with a blue and red plastic yo-yo. Photo was taken sometime in the mid to late 1990s and autographed by Tom Smothers along with his on-stage moniker "YoYo Man".
Watch the Yo-Yo Man Hoedown clip (3 minutes, 3 seconds) originally aired on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1988-1989). The clip featured Harvey Lowe, Dan Volk, Tom Kuhn (using his Silver Bullet) and, of course, Tom Smothers as The YoYo Man.
In 1988, The YoYo Man Instructional Video (in VHS format only) was released in which Tom's non-speaking "YoYo Man" character–who first appeared in Smothers Brothers sketches in the late 1960s–guides players through basic yo-yo moves. Apparently, more than 200,000 copies of the video were sold.
Tom Smothers, The YoYo Man, passed away December 27, 2023 at the age of 86. Dave Hall, owner of this museum, said, "If not for the YoYo Man sketch on their tv show, I never would have had a yo-yo business, a museum, or a collection. Thanks to Tom. I always wanted to meet him and tell him that."
