A very hard to find fixed axle, maple award yo-yo made by Hummingbird from 1989. Came in the standard Hummingbird rainbow counter display box seen in this exhibit.
Maple yo-yo painted in a very subtle sparkle dark red body, with a gold foil stamp that reads, top to bottom, left to right:
HUMINGBIRD [sic] TOY COMPANY
1st
GOLD
PLACE
AWARD 1989
The company's own name was misspelled on the stamp of their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place award yo-yos. The second place had the same stamp design but in silver foil on dark blue body halves; third place also had the same stamp design but in bronze foil on white body halves.
The unfortunate misspelling of Hummingbird caused these special award yo-yos to be pulled from yo-yo contests across the USA in the late Spring of 1989, less than a month or two after they were first introduced. A complete set was hard to find back then, and even more so today (2023). In May 1989, at the Utah State Yo-Yo Championship at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, Dale Myrberg awarded these 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place yo-yos to the respective winners before the mistake was noticed. Both the year stamp and error on these special editions make them even more interesting and valuable.
