Duncan Butterfly yo-yo in clever, eye-catching packaging. The card was made to appear like a record sleeve holding a 33 1/3 RPM vinyl record. The upper section of the card shows a printed portion of the "record" and in the middle of the card is the Duncan Butterfly yo-yo. The yo-yo face has a gold and black sticker seal applied to the face of the yo-yo to simulate a record label seen inside the record jacket sleeve. The yo-yo was made available when you joined the Frankie Smith Yo-Yo Champ Fan Club.

The label on side A of the yo-yo says, left to right, top to bottom,

Yo-Yo Champ [From Mississippi]
33 1/3 RPM Side A
Frills Records
Frankie Smith

The opposite side of the yo-yo (side B) is gold-leaf stamped with, left to right, top to bottom:

Genuine
Duncan
Yo-Yo

On top of the yo-yo on side B was placed a small folded Duncan trick sheet.

The song, Yo-Yo Champ, was released in the USA in 1982 by Frills Records on 12" vinyl, 33 1/3 RPM. Side A featured the vocal rendition by Frankie Smith; side B was the instrumental version of the song. Inside the record sleeve was a membership application to the Frankie Smith Yo-Yo Champ Fan Club (see application photo in this exhibit). Your lifetime membership includes a sleek, black official Frankie Smith Yo-Yo Champ Yo-Yo with extra strings [read: Black plastic Duncan Butterfly yo-yo with three extra strings], a Frankie Smith Yo-Yo Champ button, and a lifetime membership card in the Frankie Smith Yo-Yo Champ Fan Club. The cost of membership was $3.45.

Listen to Frankie Smith sing Yo-Yo Champ now!

It is not clear whether the yo-yo was ever sold retail in stores. If it was, it likely would have cost $3, the same retail price as a regular Duncan Butterfly yo-yo in 1982. In all likelihood, the yo-yo was exclusive to the fan club.

Frankie Smith died March 8, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 79.

Yo-Yo Champ lyrics (as best as I can make them out):

Well, I got a story to tell
About a man that's true
He's a yo-yo champ
He can prove it to you
He can make it go up
He can make it go down
He can make it go round and round and round
But the thing he really likes to do when he pulls his yo-yo string
He can Walk the Dog and make it catch the ball
Listen to my story, y'all
All about when I was a boy
I found me a real bity (?) toy
I practiced with it in my room both day and night
And I go around doin' the tricks
And even messes with all of the chicks
I make'em do it till they get it right
Cuz I'm the yo-yo champ, mama
The girls all love me so
Cuz he's a yo-yo champ, mama
Cuz they all wanna play with my... let me hear it!
YO-YO!
Let me hear it again
YO-YO!
All the girls wanna play with my Yooooo, Yoooooo

Horns!

Na na na na na na na, na
Na na na na na na na, na
Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na na na na
Mm... mm-mmm

Le, le, listen to this
When they play with it they are glad
It's the best toy they ever had
Watch yo never fail to impress the girls
Well I make it go up and down
And when I make it go round and round
They love for me to do Around the World

They call me yo-yo champ, mama
The girls all love me so
Cuz he's a yo-yo champ, mama
Cuz they all wanna play with my
Let me hear it
YO-YO!
Let me hear it again
YO-YO!
All the girls wanna play with my Yooooo, Yoooooo
Ohhh, yeah.

Come on now, everybody do a double one (?)

Na na na na na na na, na
Na na na na na na na, na
Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na na na na

One day I'm gonna have me a son.
Teach him all about how it's done.
The family tradition must go on.
He'll know every trick that I know.
How to move it fast or slow.
My boy will fill my shoes, when I'm gone.

Do it fellas.

I gotta go.

I gotta go, y'all
I gotta go.

Bye-bye
I'm on my way to M-I-SS-I-SS-I-PP-I
