| The Duncan Freehand MG (Magnesium) 2023.
A premium magnesium-body Freehand inspired by the original, Japan-made Freehand Magnesium from 2004. That first-generation model (now discontinued) was notable as the first widely released competition yo-yo made from 99.5% magnesium and sold at a then-headline price near ¥50,000. The edition seen in this exhibit echoes that iconic yo-yo with caps styled after the original and shipped in a wooden presentation box. The body features a unique "moon rock" coating that brings out magnesium’s unique feel; light like plastic, yet rigid, fast, and floaty.

At the time of ordering, you could choose between a size C bearing with slim pads or a size A bearing; the pad seat supported the small-pad configuration. Unlike the Freehand One, the hub has no groove for wide pads or friction stickers.

Approximate weight was 58.8gm without caps (measured with the large bearing).

The wooden box contained the following:
 • Freehand MG with "Mg" side caps pre-installed
 • 1x extra set of caps
 • 1x white cap dice (no pips)
 • 1x string
 • 1x wood storage box with custom-fitted foam

The original Freehand Magnesium, led by Spin Gear and produced in Japan with technical support from Shinobu Konmoto (aka "s.kon" and "skon"), generated significant buzz when domestically made high-end yo-yos were rare. Today, magnesium is less exotic, but its low specific gravity (close to plastic) makes it a practical choice for modern rim/center weight designs. Building on renewed interest in the Freehand One 2023 line, this MG brought that heritage forward in a long-awaited -- but very low production number -- release.

Released Wednesday, August 9, 2023 by Spin Gear of Japan.
