This black-and-white photograph, taken on April 9, 1951, by the Cleveland Press, captures 12-year-old Robert Batton of 8003 Woodland Avenue practicing the classic yo-yo trick "Rock the Baby" at the Woodland Recreation Playground in Cleveland, Ohio.

The newspaper clipping on the back of the photo describes him as a "Potential Champ." highlighting how children like Batton were celebrated for mastering skill-based tricks during this era. "Rock the Baby," a string trick still taught to beginners today, was a showpiece trick in 1950s yo-yo contests. This photograph reflects the golden age of the American yo-yo craze, when public parks, theaters, and city and school playgrounds served as proving grounds for future yo-yo champions.

Robert Batton passed away November 7, 2017 at the age of 80 in Sandusky, Ohio.
