Website announcements concerning the yo-yo:

Ordering period for the yo-yo opened on the Spin Gear website in Japan on Friday, December 23, 2022 and remained open until January 15, 2023. Spin Gear determined the production quantity of the Bridget yo-yo based on public pre-order reservations and placed the order with the manufacturer accordingly. Because of this system, pre-order cancellations were not allowed—once an order was placed, it was final.
According to Spin Gear, the Bridget yo-yo may exhibit slight wobble due to its complex construction, though this does not affect play. [Rick: I did not notice any vibration or shimmying in either of the two yo-yos I received.] The yo-yo was manufactured by Mitsumi in Tokyo, Japan. Due to its many finely machined parts, its smoothness may differ slightly from other high-end Japanese yo-yos.
Q: Is this a limited edition or a regular release?
A: It’s a limited edition. Only a single production run is planned. A few extras were made beyond the number of pre-orders, but no additional runs are scheduled.
Q: What’s the difference between the red and raw versions?
A: The raw version is completely uncoated aluminum, including the bullet points. It has the same laser engraving as the red version but lacks a polished finish and may show light tool marks or scratches from the machining process. The raw aluminum is untreated, so it will naturally oxidize or dull over time. You can polish it with a cloth, but due to the intricate detail, parts may lose clarity if exposed to moisture or skin oils.
The red version (seen in this exhibit) features anodic oxidation (anodizing), a durable finish used in high-end yo-yos. The color is more fade-resistant than paint but may show wear or expose the base material if dented or scratched.
From game prop to real-world yo-yo
This project was led by Yo-Yo Master Taka of Spin Gear, a former world champion and the inspiration for the birth of the Bridget yo-yo that appears in the game Guilty Gear (accessed July 1, 2025). The Bridget yo-yo was created in collaboration with Mitsumi, a precision machining specialist based in Katsushika, Tokyo.
The goal was to produce a full-metal Bridget yo-yo—something that was not feasible 20 years ago when the plastic version was first conceived as a casual fan item. This time, Spin Gear aimed to deliver a "realistic prop" that could function as a true yo-yo, especially with a world champion behind it.
There were two guiding principles: first, the yo-yo had to be usable, not just decorative. Second, its size needed to be scaled down from the exaggerated proportions seen in the game. A full-scale version would be too heavy to use safely and too expensive to produce in quantity. A miniature design ensured both functionality and affordability. The Mitsumi factory, which had already produced the high-precision 66% miniature yo-yos for Taka, was the perfect partner for the project.
Spin Gear submitted a proposal to Arc System Works for a full-metal yo-yo prop that could also perform. This wasn’t just a licensing deal—it was a technical challenge to create a commercially viable, playable version of Bridget’s in-game yo-yo.
Design challenges and innovation
The team worked from detailed internal design documents that included colors, structural features, and elements not visible in the game. Relying only on in-game visuals would have made production easier, but they chose to stay faithful to the full design, down to the smallest parts.
Some of the major design challenges and highlights included the following:
• Multi-colored embedded parts - Each side of the yo-yo contains six embedded pieces made from three different metals to create color variation—brass, copper, and dyed black iron—crafted with lathe-cut precision. Brass and copper are untreated to allow natural patina development over time.
• Highly detailed laser engraving - Logos and symbols from the in-game reference materials were engraved onto individual parts using precision lasers. Some markings, such as “28 MODEL R,” are invisible in gameplay and included purely for authenticity.
• Complex internal construction - The yo-yo is built from 39 individual parts—a remarkably high part count for any yo-yo. The main body is made of red anodized duralumin. The "bullet" section includes solid pieces of brass, iron, and copper for mass and texture. The actual yo-yo is not meant to be disassembled.
Maintenance and parts
The yo-yo can be taken apart like any other modern metal yo-yo. It uses a standard size A flat bearing and is compatible with common maintenance techniques. The bearing can be cleaned and de-oiled for bind returns. The bearing can be degreased to make it bind, if desired.
• Spin Gear: Guilty Gear -Strive- Full Metal Bridget Yo-Yo Maintenance Guide (accessed July 1, 2025).
Component list:
• 2x Body (red anodized aluminum)
• 2x Caps (black aluminum)
• 2x Cap screws (black iron)
• 1x Phase alignment screw
• 6x Bullet tips: brass (3), copper (3), iron (3) × 2 sides = 18 parts
• 6x Bullet casings: brass (1), iron (1) × 2 sides = 12 parts
• 1x Size A bearing
• 1x Custom-machined stainless steel axle
Total: 39 parts, combining five different metals—an unprecedented approach in yo-yo design.
Final notes
The Bridget yo-yo is a functioning yo-yo with exceptional design and collectibility, though it’s not optimized for high-performance competitive tricks. Advanced players may enjoy testing their skills with its unique feel and weight distribution.
Unlike typical yo-yos, this model includes a phase-alignment screw that allows users to fix the body halves in specific orientations, enabling symmetrical left/right visual alignment.
