About Hyper Yo-Yo 2024
The year 1997, during the Heisei era, saw the Japanese release of the Yomega Fireball. That release marked the beginning of Hyper Yo-Yo across Japan and the start of the yo-yo boom. The phenomenon continued with subsequent iterations in 2003 and 2010. In 2024, during the Reiwa era, the fourth wave of Hyper Yo-Yo was officially announced by Bandai on July 1, 2024. A new generation of Hyper Yo-Yos debuted with the Accel Origin model, released on July 20, 2024, kicking off an exciting new chapter for yo-yo enthusiasts and collectors.
The Accel Origin introduced a revolutionary feature—the Accelerator System—that let the yo-yo spin even while being held in your hand. This groundbreaking design opened the door to tricks previously unimaginable for beginner or intermediate players, greatly expanding the possibilities of yo-yo play. For example, the Accelerator System made mastering classic, original tricks like the "Sleeper" much easier for new players, encouraging greater confidence and fun.
The Accelerator System uses three metal bearings: one at the center and one on each side of the yo-yo's double-sided body. This innovative design enables independent rotation of the main body and its two accelerator discs, allowing the yo-yo to spin in your hand without needing to throw it. With patents applied for in Japan and the United States, there’s potential for future releases of Accel yo-yos in the U.S.

The system also introduced new tricks, such as the Axel Spin, where the yo-yo spins simply by pulling the string—a completely novel approach for players. The Accel Origin’s basic shape/profile, reminiscent of the classic Jack Russell yo-yo, was designed for ease of use, making it ideal for beginners. It excels in tricks the take advantage of the Accelerator System and classic beginner moves like "Walk the Dog," and "Rock the Baby."
Timeline of Hyper Yo-Yo Accel 2024 Announcements and Releases
• July 1, 2024: Bandai announced the return of Hyper Yo-Yo after nearly a 15 year absence.
• July 12, 2024: Bandai released information on the first ten Hyper Yo-Yo Accel tricks.
• July 17, 2024: A commemorative Hyper Yo-Yo Accel product launch event was held at Bic Camera, Yurakucho store in Japan.
• July 20, 2024: Release of the Accel Origin yo-yo in 9 translucent colors: Gaming Black, Dragonic Red (see this exhibit for a breakdown of yo-yo parts), Cartoon Pink, Cosmo Purple, Heroic Blue, Punkish Green, Sporty Lime Green, Hip Hop Yellow, and Cyber White (1,980¥).

• August 9, 2024: Bandai announced the forthcoming Wonder! School - Hyper Yo-Yo Accel Trick Certification website.
• August 26, 2024: Hyper Yo-Yo Accel featured at the Coro Coro Soul Festival and Tokyo Toy Show, where top spinners performed, and nostalgic Heisei-era yo-yos were exhibited. Attendees received special Hyper Yo-Yo Accel sticker sheets.
• August 27, 2024: Trick certification began on the Wonder! School - Hyper Yo-Yo Accel Trick Certification website, allowing players to upload their own videos and get feedback on their tricks. If you successfully passed off the trick, you received a virtual "Hyper Yo-Yo Accel Certified" sticker on your video. If you failed to pass off the trick, the certifier left comments/feedback for you so you could continue practicing the trick and try one more time.
This video certification system was a significant departure from the trick certification system used in previous Hyper Yo-Yo eras. Back then, trick certification was only done in-person at official certification centers, usually located inside a toy store or department store.
• October 5, 2024: Release of Hyper Yo-Yo Accel strings in a pack of three that contained neon pink, neon yellow, and neon orange string (660¥).
• October 19, 2024: Release of the Accel Wing yo-yo with feather-themed designs in Techno Purple, Classic Ivory, and Twilight Blue (2,530¥).
