About New Era Potato Chips
New Era Potato Chips, introduced in 1951 by the Ernest Nicolay-Russell Dancy Company, quickly became a favorite among Detroit snack enthusiasts. The brand's packaging featured a distinctive silhouette of a slim lady, surrounded by images of active individuals engaging in sports like golfing, swimming, and skiing. This design emphasized the chips' purported health benefits, suggesting they provided energy for sports and contributed to a slim figure.
The chips were produced at a factory located at the corner of 5801 Grandy Street and Hendrie Street in Detroit. In 1958, New Era merged with Frito, which later became part of Frito-Lay in 1961. Following these mergers, the New Era brand was gradually phased out in favor of Lay's potato chips.
In 1970, Better Made Potato Chips acquired the New Era brand from Frito-Lay after the latter had discontinued the product line. This acquisition allowed Better Made to expand its market reach and preserve a piece of Detroit's snack food history.
Today, Better Made remains a prominent Detroit-based potato chip manufacturer, continuing the legacy of local snack production in the city.
The yo-yo in this exhibit -- still sealed in its original polybag -- is likely from 1955 to 1965. It's unknown how these yo-yos were distributed. Duncan Beginners yo-yos were also used as promotional items for Kitty Clover potato chips and Old Dutch potato chips.
