The Genuine Duncan Yo-Yo - Gold Award from about 1968-70 was essentially a Duncan Imperial-shaped yo-yo made out of light golden brown colored plastic. Its hot stamp featured the image of a loving cup in the center of the seal. Used a fixed, steel axle, and came with a 100% cotton string.
Historically, a loving cup was a drinking cup with two handles, one either side. They were traditionally fashioned from metal (silver, pewter, or gold) and were often used in Europe as ceremonial drinking vessel for toasting at weddings, formal banquets and other mannered events. The cup symbolised the shared friendship, unity, brotherhood/sisterhood, and love between two or more people. Today, a loving cup is more often used as part of an award or trophy, which is why you see them on modern day trophies, especially at sporting events or skill-based events. In the early sixties, Duncan awarded small, plastic loving cup trophies to winners at yo-yo contests. By the early 1970s, the award was reduced to an image on a yo-yo that you see in this exhibit.
Original retail price: $1 US.
