The plastic Duncan Freehand One 2022 - Danny was a memorial edition honoring Danny Severance, a beloved yo-yo player from New Hampshire who took his own life on December 19, 2013, at just 21 years old.
From Tyler Severance, brother of Danny, as posted on duncantoys Instagram account November 18, 2022:
"From the first time I begged Danny to come to yo-yo club, I knew he would be special. He did everything with his own style and elegance. Danny’s only goal in yo-yoing was having fun with his friends. Inspiring some of the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time), and creating tricks used in World Yo-Yo Contest winning freestyles happened naturally for him.
Refining simplicity was his specialty. Inspired by Seth Peterson we started wiping the graphics off our Freehand side caps with rubbing alcohol. Creating a striking look with just a solid white cap, against a rare Freehand body color. Becoming an aesthetic still present today in yo-yoing.
When Duncan approached me about doing a [Freehand One 2022] Danny edition, I couldn’t help but ask for permission to flip the Duncan "hotdog" logo to pay homage.
Purple was Danny’s favorite color. The original purple Freehand Zero was the glasseye edition - from Brian Cabildo, founder of the DXL yo-yo club and Glass Lab yo-yo website (google both of those for a rabbit hole of integral yo-yo history). These [glasseye editions] were incredibly hard to get - only 150 pieces. Not available online. You had to go to a west coast contest to see Brian or call a yo-yo store that might’ve happened to get some from him. Many people didn’t even know this edition existed.
Duncan is a timeless brand known all around the world. The Freehand is a timeless yo-yo known by yo-yoers internationally. And speaking for Danny, we’re so honored to be able to have played a small part in the legacy of both."
According to Bryan Jardin of Duncan, 300 pieces of this model were made. Between yoyorewind.com of Japan and spingear.com of Japan, there were about 50-60 yo-yos divided between those two stores. The balance of stock (~240–250) was divided among beyondyoyos.com, yoyoexpert.com, yoyosam.com, a few friends and family, and Tyler Severance. This model sold out in the USA in less than 24 hours.
