The Duncan Hornet - 2023 National Yo-Yo Contest edition.
The Duncan Hornet was designed for advanced looping tricks and competition play. It featured a perfect center to rim weight ratio for looping tricks, starburst response, and ball-bearing axle for long spin times. Designed with input from Duncan Crew Worldwide yo-yo team, the Hornet is player-tested and competition-ready. This version of the Hornet came with a black set of aluminum spacers and a set of aluminum washers that were used between the spacer and plastic body. The washers were used to adjust the string gap slightly wider (installed; less responsive) or narrower (removed; more responsive). To keep the yo-yo's performance optimum, it was recommended that you use thick ball bearing lubrication.
About the 2023 National Yo-Yo Contest:
The contest was the National Yo-Yo League's premier U.S. championship event, held June 30 to July 2, 2023 at the Delta Hotel Phoenix-Mesa in Mesa, Arizona.
The event used the standard championship divisions: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A. In addition, there were other categories such as Women’s Freestyle, Over-40 Freestyle, International Open, and Sports divisions. The 2023 field listed 142 registered competitors.
For 2023, the contest used a qualification structure rather than making every division a straight open final. In the X divisions (2A, 3A, 4A, 5A), the event was open to all competitors, with 1-minute preliminaries that lead to 3-minute finals. Also, certain regional champions and prior national champions were seeded directly into the finals.
The 2023 national champions and top placements were the following:
• 1A: Evan Nagao, Hunter Feuerstein, Connor Seals
• 2A: Evan Nagao, Connor Scholten, John Datoy Narum
• 3A: Alex Hattori, Aliyah Tan, Don Hodgkinson
• 4A: Ryan Connolly, John Datoy Narum, Ian Johnson
• 5A: Jared Marcus, John Wolfe, Theodore Munoz
Other notable division winners were the following:
• Women’s Freestyle: Katie Thompson
• Over-40 Freestyle: Jonathan Brasell
• International Open: Brandon Vu
