The Avon YoYo Set from the early 70s. A sleeved box that included "1 cake of soap and one yo-yo". The wooden, fixed axle yo-yo (not a pegged string) came in a classic shape and featured Avon's iconic logo gold stamped on the face of the glossy lavender-colored halve. Some versions of this yo-yo are stamped with both "Avon" and "Made in U.S.A." The opposite halve is glossy pink. Yo-yo maker is unknown. The yo-yo-shaped soap cake is light pink and featured a pressed design on both sides to reflect the set's yo-yo theme. It originally came wrapped in a soft white paper (as seen in this exhibit) that is often missing from secondary market sets. The soap fragrance is best characterized as reminiscent of what you might have smelled in your grandmother's bathroom in 1972.
Why an Avon YoYo Set?
In the early 1970s, Avon relied on direct selling to consumers to distribute its beauty products. Direct selling involved a network of Avon representatives called "Avon ladies." These women would personally visit homes, workplaces, and social gatherings to showcase Avon's product line, much like what Tupperware did. They would take orders, provide product samples, and build relationships with their customers. This interaction meant that Avon could reach a wide audience and establish a loyal customer base. During this period, Avon's product offerings expanded greatly. By 1970, they had more than eight hundred items in their catalog, including cosmetics, skincare, fragrances, and other beauty-related products. These Avon ladies played an important role in introducing these various products to consumers and encouraging sales. Avon's advertisements during the early 1970s began to grow in specific markets. For example, they recognized the significance of the female teen and African-American consumer markets. Consequently, their marketing and product efforts targeted these demographics. One example of these marketing and product efforts is what you see in this exhibit. The set was most often included as a bonus or promotional item in Avon catalogs.
