The Koalito fixed axle, configurable wooden yo-yo from Spain, circa mid to late 1980s. Appears to be a hot stamp seal on both halves. Halves have a thin laquered clear coat.
The display box and yo-yo in this exhibit came from a store that the original seller's late uncle had on the island of Palma de Mallorca in the 1970s and 1980s. Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca (Majorca), in the western Mediterranean. The store was a general merchandise business that sold newspapers, stickers, tobacco, letter stationary, stamps, toys, and school supplies, among many other things.
The display box held a total of 12 Koalito yo-yos. The wood species is unknown. The Children's toy was granted patent 285565 in Spain on May 1, 1986. The patent assignee was Conde Pascual Jose Anton. Interestingly, there was no art associated with the patent entry. Clearly, the yo-yo is a Spanish counterfeit of the Tom Kuhn 3 in 1 yo-yo that was patented June 17, 1980 in the US (not Europe/Spain). Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the yo-yo was not printed on the display box or on the yo-yo.
The koala with a joey on its back on the display box lid is saying, "What fun! So many figures with a single yo-yo!!!" Interestingly, the box lid and box sides show profiles of the yo-yo's three shapes that you could configure. They were identical to the configurations you could make with a Tom Kuhn 3 in 1 yo-yo. The names of the Koalito configurations were the "Clasico" (Tom Kuhn: "Classic"), the "Koalito" (Tom Kuhn: "Flying Camel"), and the "Eucalyptus" (Tom Kuhn: "Pagoda"), the tree that koalas inhabit and forage. The box lid also shows all the parts of the disassembled yo-yo, same as a Tom Kuhn 3 in 1. The front panel of the box says, "The authentic professional wooden yo-yo." The name of the yo-yo is "Koalito", an affectionate way of saying "koala". It is a diminutive of the word koala, similar to calling a dog a "puppy" or a cat a "kitty". Note that one side of the yo-yo is stamped "3 en 1". The string appears to be a very thin gauge cotton string (only two single strands from a six or eight strand string) attached to the axle using a cow hitch loop.
