A two-color LUCK-E JA-DO CHAMPION round cloth award patch issued by JA-DO (JAck Duncan + DOnald Duncan), a Duncan wooden yo-yo sub-brand from the early-mid 1950s. The patch featured very dense top stitching, a merrowed edge (basically a thick, rounded stitching that wrapped all the way around the outside diameter of the patch), and an open sew-on back. Made out of a slightly off-white cotton twill with green rayon embroidery thread, and cheese cloth/scrim stabilizer on the back.
JA-DO was Duncan's quiet, non-promoted line of fixed axle wooden yo-yos named for Jack and Donald Duncan. The brand appears on very limited collateral and product marks from the early 1950s, distinct from the heavily advertised and marketed Imperial line that was so popular. This patch likely recognized winners in store-level or club yo-yo contests run under the JA-DO banner. "Luck-E" may have functioned either as the contest slogan or a nod to Luck, Wisconsin where Duncan yo-yo manufacturing was located at the time (1946 to about 1955).
With a diameter of 125mm, this patch is much harder to find compared to other mainstream Duncan contest patches because of the low-visibility of JA-DO programs and product. The overall design of the four-leaf clover (a luck motif) with "JA-DO" across the leaves, "Luck-E", and nine dot markers was also stamped on the face of their wooden yo-yo model. | |
