The Hodag is a mythical creature originating from North American folklore, particularly in the forests of Wisconsin. Described as a fearsome beast, it has a reptilian body, bulging eyes, sharp horns, and spikes along its back. The creature was first popularized in the late 19th century by a prankster named Eugene Shepard, who claimed to have captured one near Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
The Hodag became a [tourist] symbol of the region, with stories portraying it as both a terrifying predator and a playful, mischievous creature. Despite its origins as a hoax, the Hodag remains a beloved part of local lore, celebrated through festivals, mascots, and tourism, particularly in the Rhinelander area.
