A special Hummingbird - Nature in Motion - Executive - Hardwood (Goncolo Alves) vintage yo-yo in original box from about 1987. Made by the Country Wood Shop Ltd. of Delevan, NY and run by Brad Countryman. Country Wood Shop was the forerunner to Hummingbird Toy Company started in 1988.
Box included one velour carrying pouch, one extra string, and the illustrated "Nature in Motion" yo-yo trick book. Some of these Executive models made from exotic woods that were stamped in gold foil with the hummingbird image and "hummingbird limited" in text. These stamped versions, unfortunately, marred the appearance of the beautiful wood that it showcased.
Goncolo Alves, also known as Tigerwood and Brazillian Tigerwood, comes mainly from Mexico southward to Brazil. The wood has superb stiffness, strength, hardness, and durability. However, density and other mechanical properties vary widely depending on the growing site and source region. The wood is sometimes called "Jobillo" among woodturners, to refer to higher grades of Goncolo Alves. | |
