In 1998-1999, Bandai Hyper Yo-Yo patches were a significant part of the promotional and competitive aspect of the Hyper Yo-Yo craze in Japan. These patches were sold retail in sets of 2 for 200Â¥ each. However, they were also sometimes awarded to players who successfully mastered specific yo-yo tricks or reached certain skill levels during events or tournaments.
Purpose of the Hyper Yo-Yo trick patches
Achievement Recognition
• The patches acted as tangible rewards for yo-yo players, indicating their mastery of specific tricks or sets of tricks. These ranged from beginner-level tricks to more advanced Hyper-level tricks.
• Players were sometimes awarded patches as they advanced through different skill levels, making them a symbol of expertise and dedication.
Encouraging Progression
• Bandai's system encouraged players to continuously improve their skills. Many events, tournaments, or in-store challenges required participants to perform tricks at different levels to earn patches.
• The patches often reflected the difficulty of the tricks mastered, making the more advanced ones coveted by players.
Collector's Items
• For many, the patches became collectible items, and some players aimed to complete the entire series of 30 patches to show off their skills and passion for yo-yoing.
• Bandai sometimes released limited-edition patches, further boosting the appeal to collectors.
Promotional Events
• Many retailers, tournaments, and Bandai-sponsored events gave out trick patches and non-trick patches during the late 1990s as the Hyper Yo-Yo culture spread across Japan. These events helped maintain interest in both the yo-yo products and the accompanying media, such as the "Super Yo-Yo" anime and manga.
These patches, along with other Hyper Yo-Yo merchandise like hats, yo-yo strings, pins, shirts, and carrying cases, helped foster a sense of community and friendly competition among players. The system closely aligned with the popularity of the "Super Yo-Yo" (Chousoku Spinner) anime and manga, driving further engagement and making the yo-yo trend a major cultural movement in Japan at the time.
