Ghost Design's Ghost Yo-Yo from 2022. Ghost Design is based out of the United Kingdom and was started by Hugo Hope-Wynne. Hugo started Ghost Design products sometime in 2017.

The Ghost Yo-Yo began as a crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.com. It was touted as an "optical illusion desk toy." The yo-yo featured a unique visual effect of floating rims when it was spinning on the end of the string. At least that was the concept and idea that was sold.

It was available in three versions: bead-blasted aluminum, black anodized aluminum, and "titanium." What ultimately was delivered was a poorly functioning yo-yo with a variety of serious performance issues. The issues ranged from:

• Excessive vibration.
• The use of B-grade bearings (see "Side, large" picture).
• Constant tuning of the yo-yo (it was recommended that you do not take it apart).
• One of the three yo-yos I received, the string kept getting lodged in a thin gap between the bearing and the response area. The concave (string centering) bearing did not help. And, no tightening of the halves on the axle was possible because of how it was machined. The gap remained. Basically, the yo-yo was impossible to use right out of the box (can); it instantly became a desk paperweight.

The other two yo-yos I received, when thrown just right and tuned just right, provided a visual effect that was fascinating to watch. But, that was it. Despite the visual interest of a spinning optical illusion, the Ghost Yo-Yo was really just a one trick pony. It certainly was not intended to showcase a variety of string tricks or any other form of yo-yo play.

The "titanium" version was nothing more than the bead-blasted aluminum version with each side having a titanium ring attached.

Not much more to say about this interesting but poorly executed design that was over-promised and under-delivered. Interestingly, the yo-yo (sans the "titanium" version) continues to be sold on the official Ghost Design Website. But, unlike the crowdfunding Website from 2021, customers cannot leave any feedback or reviews on the official Website. See the original Ghost Yo-Yo crowdfunding page from 2021.
