In 1979, to celebrate Duncan's 60th anniversary, they launched a contest promotion called "Duncan Yo-Yolympics". They also released their Duncan Professional model with a Reslon-coated axle and special sidecaps branded for the Yo-Yolympics. The text on the side cap suggests that this model may have been given to a local contest winner. Regional winners were awarded the Duncan Yo-Yolympics Champion Set.

The 1979 Duncan Yo-Yolympics was open to boys and girls 15 years of age or younger. Contests were based on 10 official yo-yo tricks and a free-style event. The Yo-Yolympics was held in participating communities at local parks and winners went on to compete in city finals. The finalists qualified for state, then regional, and then nation championships. U.S. Savings Bonds were awarded to regional winners, and to Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medalists at National Finals. The Gold Medalist won a $1,000 scholarship savings bond and was pronounced the 1979 National Champion of the Duncan Yo-Yolympics. You were instructed to contact your local Parks and Recreation Department for more information on Yo-Yolympics and how to enter.
Duncan also ran the same Yo-Yolympics promotion in 1980, teaming up with Post Super Sugar Crisp to get the word out by way of their cereal boxes.
