The Alley Cat Loop Diggers animated patch was designed and made by John Wolfe (aka spontangus on Instagram) for the July 19, 2018 release of Core Concept's Alleycat 650b - Loop Diggers blue edition yo-yo only (the army green version did not come with the patch).
From the back of the patch's header card:
"This patch [and Loop Digger yo-yo, too] is also a phenakistoscope, an early animation toy.
To view the animated string border, place the patch [or the Loop Diggers yo-yo itself] on a turntable at 45 RPM. Watch the patch, yo-yo, or both, through a camera under a bright light to see the string "move". (The brighter the light, the clearer the image, so use as many light sources as possible!)
You can also see the effect with the naked eye by using a strobe light flashing at 30Hz. (VinylStrobe [for Apple devices only] is an app which does this automatically.)"
The patch also came with velcro so you could temporarily attach it to a surface such as a hoodie, a sweater... or your cloth couch.
See Alleycat 650b - Loop Diggers edition yo-yo.
