A bizarre and hard-to-find Tom Kuhn yo-yo model. Two hundred were supposedly made (according to the archived webstore at The Fantastic The) to promote the American rock band Portugal. The Man (aka The Man or PTM). The group consisted of their two founding members John Baldwin Gourley and Zach Carothers, along with Kyle O'Quin, Jason Sechrist, Eric Howk, and Zoe Manville.
Both sides of the yo-yo are laser engraved with two different designs. The quirky artwork was created by John Baldwin Gourley (yes, the same individual who is in Portugal. The Man) and Austin Sellers. The visual artistic duo are better known by their alias The Fantastic The. From their archived webstore: "Who is The Fantastic The? The Fantastic The is a partnership between John and Austin. Close friends they realized that they had the ability to compliment each others creative visions. Sometimes TFT is a complete collaboration between John and Austin, sometimes it is primarily John, and other times it is primarily Austin."
Released February 2012, the yo-yo was available from the Warner Music Group Official Site. The Tom Kuhn Yo-Yo website had an obscure picture of it on one of their own web pages and also on their Facebook page. However, there was no mention of when or where the yo-yo was available from the Tom Kuhn site. This model flew well below the radar of Tom Kuhn fans.
The Tom Kuhn logo was laser engraved on both sides but it is very small and almost lost in the artwork design.
The yo-yo itself is the Tom Kuhn Sleep Machine (oddly enough, it was incorrectly sold in a Tom Kuhn No Jive 3 in 1 box). A maple wood, size I ball bearing axle yo-yo with Dr. Tom Kuhn's Turbo Disc pads for the response. Came with extra string and response pads, and instruction sheet.
