From the original Tom Kuhn website in 2004:
"Given the demands of function over the past two and a half decades, the basic yo-yo has been transformed by Tom Kuhn in his quest for the perfect yo-yo. It had to be responsive, predictable, perfectly balanced and weighted with extremely long spin time. It had to be easy to maintain and therefore fun to play even after nightfall. It should be shock-resistant, low maintenance and low cost."
"Now, true to form, the next generation of Tom Kuhn Yo-yos from What's Next. Tom's personal favorites.. the Recreational Devise.. code name... RD1 (butterfly configuration) and now introducing the incomparable RD2 (classic configuration). Beautifully finished Wooden.. [size I] ball-bearing axle, high performance rim weighted yo-yos. Additional features are Dr. Yo's innovative, patented Turbo Disc Response System and stainless steel weight rings. (optional with some models). We are not sure if these are yo-yos or works of art. You decide."
This special edition of the RD-2 in Cherry Rosewood included two weight rings, eight extra Turbo Discs, and a museum quality, black lacquered base for display.
Original RD-2s came in a sealed, clear display tube. Also, originals have the year "2004" imprinted at the 6:00 position on the yo-yo's side. At the 9:00 position is imprinted "CARPE" as a numerator and "DIEM" as a denominator; at the 3:00 position is imprinted "1.00" (yo-yo's gap) as a numerator and "1.618" (yo-yo's width) as a denominator.
