The Doughnut was the freshman, dead (unresponsive) yo-yo release from Hubless YoYo. Hubless Yo-Yo is the creation of Patrick Killian out of California, USA and the Doughnut is the result of several years of development. Prior to Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017, there was zero information on any social media sites about not only the company but the yo-yo itself or its forthcoming release.
Sometime in the early to mid afternoon of Thursday, November 23, 2017, YoYoExpert made a post on their Instagram account announcing the availability of the Doughnut. Within 2 or 3 hours all editions were sold out. These were initially available in very limited quantities in five colorways.

The first 5 colorways made available were the following:

According to Patrick, "Our goal was to create the world’s first hubless yo-yo. You may have seen a hubless wheel on a bicycle or motorcycle. On a bicycle, a hubless wheel appears to be just the rubber tire. The center hub and the spokes that attach it to the outside rim are gone. You can actually step through this wheel from one side to the other! Well, you can’t step through The Doughnut, but you can look through it. We like to say, "There’s a hole in our yo-yo!". We may be a bit crazy, but we think you’ll like the world’s first production hubless yo-yo. Bringing this technology to a yo-yo was an exciting process of finding a balance between form (let’s make the hole in the center larger) to function (let’s make sure the yo-yo will spin). A big yo-yo, The Doughnut will add some sugar to your tricks (this yo-yo looks great traveling in the air) and challenge you to keep it smooth and straight. We look forward to being part of your collection, and hearing what you think about our delicious confection."
The center grooved, 12 ball bearing axle in this yo-yo is the largest found in any production yo-yo: 15 mm x 21 mm x 4 mm (.591" x .827" x .157").
By design (or not?) the Chocolate Glazed, Nuclear Power Plant, and Chocolate Dipped with Sprinkles models had very small, but conspicuous, drips or specks of misplaced color on the yo-yo.
Shortly after the initial release of the Doughnut on YoYoExpert, the official www.hublessyoyo.com website came online. Besides having available the original five SKUs, the website also included two special SKUs. These were the result of opening up an "Artist Choice" to GruntBull Anodizing (GBA) of Gettysburg Ohio for the unique color schemes. The two special color editions that GBA created were the following:

As of January, 2019, the Doughnut yo-yo had patent pending status (62553288).
