The responsive AXL was Custom Yo-Yo's 1998 freshman release in a long line of unique aluminum, ball bearing yo-yo models that they made between 1998 and 2001. It was similar in shape to the Tom Kuhn SB-2 but used a size G ball bearing axle. Also, the AXL was not initially designed with any response pad system. By 1999, however, Custom Yo-Yo's response pads, known as "performance rings" began to appear in their product line-up. By the late 00s, the size G ball bearing axle was replaced with the more common size A ball bearing axle.

An original, Custom Yo-Yo AXL from 1998 has the following characteristics, compared to the second version made ten or more years later:
• Comes in a square plastic display box with two custom foam insert spaces: one for the yo-yo; one for the strings and spare fixed axle.
• Does not have Custom Yo-Yo's performance rings (response pads) on the inside walls of the yo-yo.
• Uses a size G ball bearing axle (inside diameter .187 in; outside diameter .375 in; width .125 in).
• Includes a stainless steel fixed axle to swap out the ball bearing axle, if desired.
• A superscript trademark symbol appears with the engraved "The AXL" name on one halve.
• No circle around the overlaid "C" and "Y" logo.

Original retail price: $40 US.
