Roy Claxton Acuff was a popular country music singer and entertainer for many years at the Grand Ole Opry, a weekly country music stage concert in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Acuff also occasionally used an early 1970s Duncan Butterfly yo-yo during his performances. Hummingbird released the wooden signature yo-yo with his name and likeness on it as seen in this exhibit (though it's unknown if it was released before or after his death on November 23, 1992). The yo-yo was originally sold at the gift shop of the Grand Ole Opry. It came in a plastic bag with a Hummingbird header card stapled to the top of the bag. The version in this exhibit came in Hummingbird packaging which was not how they were ever sold because the box does not have the trick sheet included. In fact, the "Trick sheet included" text on the packaging has been blacked out with a marker pen.
Hummingbird also released a yo-yo to commemorate the Grand Ole Opry venue itself. You can see it here.
Sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s, Duncan released their "Professional" model with a photographic picture of Roy Acuff holding his violin along with a facsimile of his signature, on one side; the opposite side had the "Opryland USA" logo. The yo-yo came in a display box and retailed for $2.00. (In 1999, Infinite Illusions was selling a limited supply of this model; two per order. At the time they were selling them as new, old stock for $25.)
