A beautiful Hummingbird Toy Company yo-yo made from the hardwood Brazilian Tulipwood. One of my most favorite looking wooden yo-yos. Brazilian Tulipwood is a sustainable wood species that is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, though it is in short supply (2016). The tree itself is found in a narrow geographical area of Brazil. Its size is small enough to be considered a shrub. As such, it typically yields only modest amounts of usable wood. Because of these limitations, Tulipwood is often reserved for very small specialty wood items--such as yo-yos.
This "Executive" yo-yo line from this particular time period has the Hummingbird logo stamped onto it in gold leaf. If these are purchased without their accompanying box, you can still easily identify the maker of the yo-yo based on the stamp. However, it is more challenging to correctly identify the type of wood that it is made out of. As such, it is best to collect these in their box. (Which, in turn, can affect its value).
Came packaged with a velour pouch, extra strings, and a trick booklet. | |
