Yo-yo itself is the same as the Mardi Gras No. 700 from 1962, but with several differing factors. The stock number went from 701 to 1701 (Duncan introduced four-digit stock numbers around mid 1963, early 1964; that is also approximately the time when they moved away from poly-bagged product to new blister packs, such as this one). This version of the Mardi Gras also used a different stamp design, and was made in a butterfly configuration. Notice that the term "butterfly" was not stamped anywhere on the yo-yo or the card. Odd, too, that the yo-yo was mounted on a "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" card – a production error? Like the Mardi Gras No. 700, the 1701 was probably marketed for girls as well.
The stamp is in gold color and consists of "Duncan" in block letters; "Mardi Gras" in the same stylized script as found on the Mardi Gras Imperial version; and a large imprint of the Mardi Gras Duncan Mister Yo-Yo head as seen on the Mardi Gras Imperial card.
Clear tenite plastic embedded with pink and white plastic blobs and gold, long (4 mm) strips. The card on which it is mounted says "Duncan Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color Yo-Yo Return Top" with the likeness of Walt Disney's character Ludwig Von Drake appearing just below the text.
Original retail price: 69 cents US.
