This version of the Stinger yo-yo was Small Minds Press' first and only yo-yo at the time in 1996. The success of this novelty yo-yo spurred them to create and release other unusual versions in 1997, among which were the "Killer Bees" yo-yo embedded with three bees and the "Thrasher" yo-yo embedded with two shark's teeth.
This yo-yo eventually received U.S. Design patent D382,919 for an ornamental yo-yo design. The 14 year term patent was issued to Carlton F. Calvin of 740 N Michigan Ave., Pasadena, CA, 91104, on August 27, 1997.
Select Profile on the right and note the hockey puck style halves on this design. The yo halves on its 1997 version 3 successor is much more refined and rounded.
Small Minds Press debuted in 1996 and over the next several years, the company released other novelty yo-yos with unusual embedded objects like the following:
• Flowers
• Killer bees
• Scorpions
• Seahorse
• Shark's teeth
Original retail price: $9 US.
