In 1998, during the yo-yo boom, this model of yo-yo was "the industries first and only 24-carat gold-plated yo-yo and yo-yo stand." Matching stand was sold separately. Came packaged in a plastic case, with a royal blue velvet carrying bag, two strings, a metal ballbearing axle, and a metal fixed axle, both interchangeable. Body material was 6061 aluminum.
The Golden Eye also came in a concave, butterfly version known as the Golden Fly.
At the time this yo-yo was released (along with many other Custom yo-yo models), it was sold under the Custom Yo-Yo brand name and manufactured by Mesa Custom Machining Corporation of Gilbert, Arizona.
As of August 2015, this yo-yo was still being manufactured and sold but under the Custom Products brand name, and still manufactured by Mesa Custom Machining Corporation of Gilbert, Arizona. These later versions had PATENT PENDING and 24K GOLD additionally engraved on the face of one halve. The original, debut version (seen in this exhibit) did not have the additional engraving, making them more valuable and desirable to collectors. Also, the packaging for these later versions was paper-based.
Original retail price for yo-yo: $80 US.
Original retail price for matching stand: $40 US. | |
