A yo-yo champion award shield given by the Canadian yo-yo company "National Yo-Yo", November 1973. This is the patch/contest that started my life-long interest in yo-yos and yo-yo play. The patch was originally sewn onto the front of a red, short-sleeve t-shirt and presented to the winner which, in this particular case, was me (see the December, 1973 photograph of me wearing the t-shirt, as taken by my father). As an uninhibited 12 year old, I frequently wore the patch shirt and thought nothing of putting it through the wash. After a while the shirt found its way into the "I'll never wear that again" pile of clothes in the bottom of my dresser drawer. Years later, my mother had the foresight to remove the well-worn patch from the shirt and preserve it for me when I cared more about my personal history.

Even though the condition of this patch is not what I wished it was, the sentimental value and very fond memories associated with it mean so much more. I would like to eventually get the same patch but in new condition. As of 2021, I have yet to come across another one, even on auction sites.

This shield award was won at the same time I earned the five trick yo-yo patch, also given out by National Yo-Yo (and seen in this museum). The contest was held outside the Nitingale Pharmacy (it's now a used book store in 2021) on the north-east corner of 41st and Dunbar in Vancouver, B.C. There were about 12 kids who entered the contest and about five who showed up just to watch the demonstrator. I could do all five tricks for the 15 trick award, but I couldn't do one of the five tricks to earn the ten trick award (in this case it was the Three Leaf Clover trick). Because you had to earn the patches in succession, I was unable to earn all three patches that day; just the five trick award.

On a side note, as the demonstrator reached into his car to give me the award shirt and patch I tried to convince him to give me the 15 trick award (since I had done all five tricks for that one) but he insisted I show up at the next contest which was the following Saturday, in North Vancouver. He said he would give me another chance to earn the ten trick award. When Saturday came my parent's thought it was too far to drive. I never made it to another contest in my youth.
