The Birth of 5A and the Freehand
In 1999, yo-yo demonstrator Steve Brown revolutionized yo-yoing by inventing counterweight play, now known as 5A. While it initially gained attention from just a small niche of players, the concept would eventually reshape the sport. In 2000, Steve joined Duncan Toys as a demonstrator, then moved into the position of Sales & Marketing Coordinator. Moving to Duncan’s Ohio headquarters, he collaborated with the company to patent the counterweight system, essential for 5A play. His first design for Duncan, the Freehand, debuted shortly after. A capped plastic yo-yo that excelled in both 1A and 5A play. It was also Duncan’s first yo-yo designed specifically for performance, setting the stage for modern yo-yoing.

The Rise of the Peak in Canada
Fast forward to 2006, where mechanical engineer Chris Mikulin from Canada sought to create a better yo-yo that combined optimized weight distribution with artistic appeal. The result was the Peak, released in a limited run of 50 pieces, each hand-painted by his partner, Levi McCarroll. The Peak became a cornerstone of the Caribou Lodge brand (CLYW), evolving into the Peak 2 and solidifying its reputation as an iconic design in yo-yo history.

A Collaboration Years in the Making
In 2014, Steve Brown joined Caribou Lodge as Marketing Manager, eventually stepping into the role of Creative Director. Fast forward a decade, and Steve stumbled upon a joke Instagram post by Bryan Jardin of Duncan Toys, suggesting a collaboration between Duncan and Caribou Lodge. That simple idea sparked countless text messages, phone calls, CAD sketches, and prototypes, eventually giving rise to the aluminum Peakhand that you see in this exhibit.

This collaboration blends the best of both worlds: the body profile of the Peak paired with the caps, weight distribution, and small bearing axle system of the Freehand. The result is a yo-yo that feels nostalgic yet fresh, appealing to fans of both iconic designs.

Each Peakhand - Duncan × Caribou yo-yo came with a Duncan die counterweight (in this case, pink), one (red) string, a sticker, and a limited-edition Caribou enamel pin. The model was released in four colors: Gold Nugget (seen in this exhibit), Salmon Fade, 28 Stories, and Clearview Station.
