Duncan FreeHand Zero 2006 - Mongu edition. Solid dark brown body, light brown sidecaps with black in imprint. This model, along with Duncan's debut of their proprietary character called Mongu, was first made available exclusively at the 2006 World Yo-Yo Contest, August 10-12, held in Orlando, Florida (accessed January 18, 2023). Later, it was sold again at the 2006 US National Yo-Yo Contest held the first weekend in October, in Chico, California.
When Mongu debuted to the yo-yoing public in the latter half of 2006, few, if anyone, knew the story behind the character. They just knew it was a lovable "thing" from Duncan. The same was also true of Duncan's Flying Squirrel, the Duncan Man, and Dice Head Guy. But at the start of 2007, Duncan released four different eight page mini-comics that explained the history behind each of these four proprietary characters. Mini comic #2, entitled Duncan Equals Love, explained the story behind the Mongu character. Check it out! DOWNLOAD PDF (2.88 MB) to see the full mini comic. Best viewed using Adobe Acrobat 10 or later.
The series of four mini comics were included in assortments of Duncan Imperial and Butterfly models, from January 1, 2007 to April 1, 2007.
• #1 - Opportunity Knocks
• #2 - Duncan Equals Love
• #3 - The Transformation
• #4 - Born to Fly
Since the initial release of the Freehand Zero - Mongu edition in 2006, Duncan has resurrected the same Mongu character design on several other yo-yo models, including the following:
• Freehand AL - Mongu (2020)
• Freehand NextGen - Mongu (2019)
• Freehand One - Mongu (2023)
Other Mongu releases also exist.

In 2004, Steve Brown, who was also working for Duncan, introduce the new Duncan FreeHand Zero (FHZ) yo-yo to the world. The FreeHand Zero was successor to the original and very popular Duncan Freehand yo-yo from 2001.
Molded after the body of the original FreeHand, the Zero is a wide, butterfly-shape yo-yo; allowing for forgiving play and better stability. The ball bearing axle has been refined for maximum spin time while the weight has been re-distributed for optimum play. Each FH Zero came with three different counterweights. The included three counterweights in this Mongu edition is a standard-sized yellow die, a blue rubber ball, and a silver metallic skull.
I assume the logo on the opposite sidecap is the standard FreeHand Zero logo printed in black, same text color as the sidecap color on the opposite side.
Original retail price: $25 USD. | |
