Duncan Butterfly (Papillon)

OwnerRick Brough

The classic Duncan Papillon (French for "Butterfly"), made by Duncan U.S.A. for sale in Canada. This version is from around 1995. Translucent red plastic with a fixed, metal axle. The Butterfly design on the side cap was identical to the US version. Only the card was different.

Note the bi-lingual English/French text on the back of the card and on the front of the card with "Butterfly" being printed on the yo-yo's side cap and "Papillon" printed the card, sufficiently meeting Canada's bi-lingual laws. Noticably absent from the card is the use of the word "yo-yo". If you are a yo-yo collector, you know the reason why.

Since 1958, when Wayne Lundberg, a Duncan employee, invented the Butterfly configured yo-yo, the butterfly motif used on the face of one halve has undergone numerous revisions and redesigns. The motif seen on the yo-yo in this exhibit was used in 1995, but had been in use since 1991.

From duncantoys.com:
"The Original and best selling string yo-yo of all time! A favorite for [more than] 65 years, the Butterfly offers a wide profile shape that makes landing the yo-yo on the string much easier. It features a flared shape, steel axle, and durable plastic body that can withstand impact. It's great for learning the basics of yo-yoing!"
