Champion, Second, and Third place award patches for Duncan Yo-Yo Contests by Flambeau, from the early 1970s. The five star Champion patch -- considered first place -- was a departure for Duncan from the traditional "First" place patch designs that they usually made. However, it was not unique or unusual. Duncan made a similar patch set design in the late 1950s to early 1960s. See Expert, 2nd, & 3rd place patch awards. The patch set in this exhibit came from a Duncan Yo-Yo Contest kit that was sent to recreational departments around the country. The kit also included extras of the same three patches, extra strings, contest rule sheets, and trick sheets. The kit is from the early 1970s, which explains the registered trademark insignia next to Duncan and Flambeau, but it does not explain the missing insignia on the Champion patch. One theory is that the Champion patch was a "new" old patch from the 1960s, that was repurposed for use in the contest kit.

A second version of the five star Champion patch exists in which the blue portion is red, and the red portion is blue. Exhibit coming soon!

In 1968, Duncan became a division within Flambeau, Inc. These particular patch sets are Flambeau-branded and probably were being awarded from the early 1970s into the late 1970s. Note the registered trademark symbols after Duncan and Flambeau. Compare with 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place awards from 1968.

By 1980, Duncan dropped from their patch designs the registered trademark symbol from "Duncan" and also completely removed "by Flambeau". See 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards from 1980.
