With a transaxle, a special, low-resistance plastic ring slips over the axle. The string wraps around the outside of the ring. With a yo-yo, such as the Yomega FIRESTORM the string never touches the axle. Not only does the ring (i.e. spool) permit extra long spins, it also gives the string a longer life.
