That is the halves were machined so that the response surfaces for the SPR system were flush with the yo-yo halves. Pictured here is a marbled blue Playa with blue anodized weight rings, made specially for Dave's Skill Toys online store. Custom logo and specially engraved weight rings as well. The marble blue halves were an exclusive. Notice that the weight rings have the domain name for skilltoys.net engraved on them. The logo was designed by Oke Rosgana, and the colors in the logo is different on the Remix and the Playa models, to tell them apart without disassembly.
